I remember this area as one of my favorite camping spots ever. South Fork campground is owned and operated as a Forest Service public campground. It has no hookups but does have water available and public restrooms. The campground hosts are always the best by being friendly, neighborly but very strict with the rules. I like that.

| Can you picture yourself enjoying this hiking trail? |
| The White Mountain Wilderness |
There are several great hikes that start from this campground and you can't go wrong on any one of them. The areas enter the high mountains of the White Mountain Wilderness and it is certainly a great time to enjoy the cool ponderosa pines and all the other natural things that make hikers, horse riders and backpackers appreciate. Waterfalls, wildlife, clear skies and lots of quiet: these are wonderful mountains.
There are varying degrees of difficulty and a simple map at the ranger station provides everyone with a clear idea about lengths of trails and what to expect from each one of them. Many of the trails link together to make sweeping loop trails and even short cuts if you change your mind.
I don't know what kind of damage the recent fires have caused this area. I guess it is safe to assume that many of the landscapes you see in my photos no longer exist. The fires may have already consumed them all. I am headed back to Ruidoso this week and I am excited about the prospect of checking on the forest lands around the area to see what has changed. I'll report back to you soon....

Such a bad year for fires. Hope some of this green beauty is left.
We have been through Lincoln County NM several times, always said we would stop one day and explore... now I wished we had stopped! Wildfires are everywhere this summer, we have 8 currently burning in Utah! Yet... unbelievably, fireworks displays are everwhere! They should be banned from selling fireworks let alone letting folks fire them off!
Good thing our home is on wheels!
Thank you for a good post! Geri
We are so saddened by this recent news. We pray that the firefighters can soon put out this fire. This is such a beautiful area.
