Overnight in Marathon

Still reminiscing about my camping trip to Big Bend National Park. Still homesick, too, for a return to such a nice place to hike, camp, chill, and soak up some good old fashioned contentment and serenity.

My first night on the road was a stay in Marathon, Texas. Not much here but I love visiting the place and just hanging out at the cool motel, hotel, community garden, etc.

I parked overnight across the street from the Gage Hotel. I knew it would not be a very quiet night because of the highway noise and the train traffic. My camper was just next door to the train track. But I still rested well and very much enjoyed the next morning's breakfast at a little place near the Gage.

I took a break (below) at a rest area on the way up to the Chisos Basin. I call it the bear stop because black bear are known to frequent the area. This is October and the landscape is still plush and green from the summer rains. It was beautiful.
Below are cottages that are available to rent. Just perfect. No TV or other intruders are in the rooms to distract your quality time with nature.

Enjoyed reading your past two posts reminiscing about Big Ben. Your photograhps are so beautiful. I hope you get back there soon.

Your post makes me want to go see Marathon for myself. It looks like a place to just take your time soaking in the atmosphere.

Back in the 80's we stayed in a motel in the Virgin Islands that had no phones and no TV. No air conditioning -- just ceiling to floor jalousie windows that let in the ocean air.

At night impromptu steel bands would play on the street beneath our room. It was so much more enjoyable than staying in a hermetically sealed high rise hotel.

Your description of the motel brought those pleasant memories back. :)

Very nice area. West TX has some nice rest areas to stay over night. Then I also park in a "BFF" driveway in Alpine.
